Artist Statement
My work is based on the inner workings of the self, my personal transformation or alchemical process that has taken place over the years, and the glances or moments of inspiration one gets when the mind is emptied of noise or external stimulation. I recall the time when I was thinking about a name for my series, I had absolutely no idea what it would be, and one night, this word came to mind, Henosis. I didn’t know anything about it then, I don’t even think I had heard it before, so I looked up the meaning, and surprisingly enough, the literal meaning of the word matched precisely what was going on in the creation process of these paintings.
I started my paintings based on the grid, which by means is the union of horizontal and vertical lines that are opposite to one another if they’re taken as separate elements, but when coming together and interlacing one another, becoming a grid; the duality of this opposition disappears or converges. I would dare to say that it comes from a level of consciousness where even the core concept of consciousness dissolves.
The grid is a structure or motif that is always present in my paintings, some are clearer than others, and almost all have more than one grid applied to a single canvas. I stood in working within the limitations of the monochrome, which to me was a powerful way of reinforcing the unity among all the elements. With time the paintings evolved to include organic shapes, while still being part of the whole, and some features extend outside the parameters of the canvas, occupying a larger field.
